Palace Chat is a visual chat program that lets you choose avatars, sometimes called dollz, you use to go from room to room and palace to palace to talk with people.
The thousands of Palaces are really Palace Server software that is on hosting servers all over the world. Anyone can own a palace by contacting a Palace Hosting Service like www.fshosting.com and pay a fee for them to set up the Palace Server software and give you server space for your Palace. The cost depends on how many rooms you want in your Palace and how many peoples you can have chatting at the same time. You have to create your own rooms which can be just about anything inside or outside from a living room, a bedroom, a bathroom, a hot tub, a patio, a bank, a bar, a massage parlor, a doctors office, a bridge, a swimming pool, a lake, a beach at the ocean, or anything you can think of. Most people have a theme for their Palace which could be a town, a amusement park, or alot of people have Hogwarts castles from Harry Potter. Some Palaces are for kids and teens and some are R rated. Anyway you create your rooms then upload them with FTP to the Palace Server Software. Then you write scripts that make doors in each of your rooms to let you go from room to room and control what people in the rooms can do.This gets kinda complicated so most people don't actually get their own Palace until they get really good at writing the scripts and using FTP.
You do not have to have your own Palace to have fun and chat on Palace. There are two ways to use Palace Chat. One way is to download a program called Palace Client that is kinda like IRC. The other way you don't have to download anything. You just go to a Palace that is running Instant Palace which is Java. Nothing downloads on your hard drive and you can try it to see if you like it. This is really easy and is how almost everyone starts chatting with Palace. You can go to www.instantpalace.com and find out how to use Instant Palace really quick and there are lots of links to Palaces that let you use Instant Palace. You can see all the great Palace rooms and see how the avatars or dollz are used. There is a tutorial there and a Practice Palace where peoples hang around all the time to help newbies.
Most Palaces do not run Instant Palace. For these you have to download the Palace Client which you can get for both the Mac and the PC. Palace Client is free and there are lots of places you can download it.
